Elevating Erste Bank’s Digital Experience

Tackling the PSD2 Challenge

In 2017, while Hungarian banks were struggling to catch up with the features of PSD2, Erste Bank was in a special situation: threatened by new FinTech hotshots like TransferWise and Revolut, they had to redesign their services really fast. This was a task for redesigning their banking app and web services with the implementation of PSD2, keeping the user experience smooth enough to give a feel of banking on a cloud-ooh, and it had to be done within three months.

Adapting the New Design to the Old Backend System

Try fitting a sleek new spaceship into the old garage. Our UX/UI redesign needed to co-op with the vintage back-end systems at Erste Bank. We, therefore, spent hours talking to company experts, decoding how banking systems work, steering through legal and security mazes, working our way around quirks of existing user journeys. We created an impressive 1,700 screens-wireframes, UI design.

Adopting Agile Methods in a Corporate Environment

It was a deadline tighter than your favorite skinny jeans; we were operating within a corporate setup with an external development team. Yes, we really needed to be more agile than a gymnast. We replatformed in-house design and communication onto SCRUM-based with full transparency of progress. With this, it meant everyone knew what was cooking and could change direction at any moment.

Ensuring Compliance with the New EU Banking Directive

Compliance with PSD2 felt like learning a new language. We plunged into the ocean of new security and online banking standards to fit all the legal criteria. Each new feature and process was at once put under the harsh spotlight of PSD2 to make sure we stayed on the right side of the law.

Meeting an Insanely Short Deadline

Three months. That was how much time we had to do a research-backed user experience redesign of a widely used retail banking app. We followed design thinking and lean methodologies, kept the client informed about everything, and forged ahead: sprint planning, review meetings, retrospectives, daily standups, brainstorming events, and on-site days. It was a marathon at sprint speed, and we loved every minute of it.

Redesigning Payment and Money Transfer Flows

We made the service PSD2-ready and redesigned most of the flows of payments and money transfers, adding new ways of payment. Among such features, real-time notifications are integrated, enhanced security measures, and streamlined user interfaces that enable smoother and more secure transactions.

Impact and Results

Our redesign helped Erste Bank get around a difficult period by improving its online banking experience while the new system, built on a wholly different architecture, was still under development. It significantly increased customer feedback and user satisfaction. Diligent effort, coupled with creative solutions, helped us to ensure that Erste Bank meets regulatory requirements while keeping their customers happy.
